A Promise to Our Readers

Dear Hyphenly Readers,
These days, it’s hard to tell what’s real online.
That stunning artwork? Might be AI.
That moving speech? Could be deepfaked.
Even the research you relied on might have been auto-generated.
At Immigrantly, we’ve made a commitment to human-first storytelling. That means real voices, real experiences, and real research—crafted with care by a team who believes your attention deserves better.
With Hyphenly, our goal has always been to deliver joyful, well-researched stories that honor immigrant identities. Everything you read here has been fact-checked, felt, and thoughtfully curated.
This week, we’re highlighting two Latin immigrant artists who remind us of the power of human-made expression:
Raul De Lara
Brooklyn-based sculptor Raul De Lara uses woodwork to tell stories of labor, memory, and migration.
As a DACA recipient, his art pokes at the myth of the American Dream: drooping brooms and slouching farming tools become quiet symbols of immigrant exhaustion and resilience.
His solo exhibition Raíces/Roots explores his return to his childhood home in Mexico after nearly two decades away—a homecoming made complicated by his immigration status.

Ana Mendieta
The late Ana Mendieta, a pioneering Cuban-American artist and filmmaker, turned her political exile into visual poetry. She was raised in multiple orphanages and foster homes in Iowa after immigrating to the US from Cuba as part of a US government asylum program for adolescents after the Cuban revolution.
Mendieta’s work blends her body with nature—roots, blood, earth—becoming metaphors for cultural inheritance and displacement. According to The Met, “the multidisciplinary artist Ana Mendieta is remembered for a richly realized oeuvre that fused Afro-Cuban religious traditions with feminist thought and questions of ecology.” Learn more about the artist here. |

This month, we are particularly looking to feature stories from queer immigrants. We are looking for personal stories that are queer in all senses of the word – whether it’s your coming-out story, a movie that changed your life, how queerness looks in your culture and family, profiles on queer elders you’ve learned from, and more.
